Workshop

Several evidence-based treatment methodologies exist for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). They are mainly focused on the traumatic events itself. Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) is a treatment methodology in which traumatic events are not treated in isolation but within its context. NET aims therefore not only at fear extinction but also at integration of traumatic events in autobiographical memory. NET is especially appropriate for patients that have gone through multiple and complex trauma like repetitive sexual- or organized violence and war. Chronologically working through traumas across the life span will help recognition of interconnected emotional trauma networks. This will restore autobiographical memory function and result in a better understanding of basic assumptions and social emotions that have developed. NET offers meaning, restores self-respect and offers the possibility of testimony in case of human rights abuse. Evidence is increasing for NET, both in the developed world as well as in developing countries. It is generally well tolerated and the methodology is easy to understand. In this workshop, the principles and practice of NET will be discussed in an interactive manner. At the end of the workshop the participant is acquainted with the theoretical framework of NET, its indication and practice.
