Workshop

This presentation is grounded in several years of psychotherapy practice with clients from different spiritual and religious backgrounds, as well as in research among psychotherapists interested in including spiritual perspectives when appropriate. The purpose of this presentation is to illustrate and discuss the potentials of addressing clients´spiritual needs and/ or interests within psychotherapy. This will be done by presenting clinical cases as well as findings from a current research project on how psychotherapists understand and navigate spirituality within psychotherapy at Blanquerna University, Barcelona. This presentation is informed by Social Constructionist views where different psychotherapy approaches can be integrated. Research shows that an increasing number of people call themselves "spiritual but not religious". And many clients want to discuss spiritual matters in psychotherapy. Spirituality has often been excluded from clinical literature and training. Psychotherapists may still lack knowledge on how to address spiritual matters in clinical settings. Others may develop sensitive and creative approaches that remain unknown. After my presentation, I will invite participants to share views on spirituality, relevant clinical experiences, and ideas that could contribute to the integration of spiritual matters in clinical settings and within training programs for psychotherapists.
