Workshop

The earlier clinical literature suggested that Asian immigrants either did not receive mental health treatment or they would drop out of group therapy because of the stigma of mental illnesses and such cultural value as familism in the Asian communities. In recent decades, multicultural psychotherapy indicated that Asian clients would receive mental health services and benefit enormously from group therapy, if these services are provided in a culturally congruent fashion (Cheung, 2001, 2005, 2009; Hong & Ham, 2001). In the mini-workshop, the presenter will provide an overview on the theory and practice of group therapy for Asian immigrant clients who suffer from severe and persistent mental disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. He will discuss how to assess the cultural identity and acculturation of the client; recruit, select, and prepare each client for the most suitable therapy group for him or her; and adapt the group skills appropriately to the needs and expectations of each client in the group. He will integrate multicultural psychotherapy with Yalom’s interactional group therapy model (Cheung, 2015, 2016; Sue & Sue, 2016; Yalom, 1983, 2005). In addition to didactic lecture, interactive activities will be used to enhance learning.
