Workshop
I propose to give a mini-workshop to educate participants on Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), an evidenced based practice for PTSD, utilizing a case example of a patient centered approach to healing from PTSD, depression, and suicidality. The presentation revolves around a case that highlights the need to tailor psychotherapies to patients based on their responses and needs. The case brings together methodologies of two often competing therapies, psychodynamic and cognitive therapies, melded to meet the needs of a patient. She lost her Father to suicide as a young girl and went on to film a documentary interviewing her siblings about their loss. Decades after the documentary, she lost two siblings to suicide and blamed herself for not saving them, leading to chronic suicidality, depression, and PTSD. After completion of her treatment, she no longer meets criteria for PTSD, no longer has suicidality, and her depression is in remission. The purpose of the workshop is to provide educational didactics about CPT and demonstrate the importance of individualizing treatments to ensure better patient outcomes. This case serves as a poignant example of how deeply suicide affects survivors and the role that guilt and shame often play in perpetuating PTSD and depression.
