The Dutch Expertise Center Personality Disorders (ECPD) initiated the development and implementation of a Guideline Integrated Treatment (GIT-PD) for patients with personality disorders (Kaasenbrood, 2015). In this symposium we will outline GIT-PD and its development, how it can be implemented and how its quality can be warranted.

Although evidence based psychotherapies for personality disorders are effective, many patients do not have access to those specialized psychotherapies. Reasons are complexity of therapy protocols, excessive training needed for professionals leading to limited availability, as well as several patient related factors. Thus many personality disorder patients get ‘treatment as usual’ (TAU) which is variable in quality. To improve quality of TAU for personality disorders, Guideline Integrated Treatment (GIT-PD) was developed. In this presentation background, rationale and general framework of GIT-PD will be outlined.Materiaal en methodes
In the Netherlands, the Expertise Center Personality Disorders (ECPD) initiated the development of GIT-PD for personality disorders. GIT-PD contains general principles for treating personality disorders, basic attitudes for clinicians working with those patients, and general and specificintegrated treatment strategiesResultaten
A Dutch manual for GIT-PD is available. A training program for healthcare professionals has been developed, including educational materials and a ‘train the trainer’ course. Twelve institutions for Mental Healthcare started implementing GIT-PDConclusie
GIT-PD provides a useful treatment framework for patients with personality disorders. Feasibility in daily practice is good, thus creating an opportunity to improve personality disorder treatment in a broad range of Mental Healthcare settings.Auteurs

To ensure a successful implementation of the GIT-PD it’s necessary to provide the connected institutions for mental health care with educational material and a training program that is easily accessible and suitable. The ECPD provides not only a manual and a training program but also creates a platform on their website with all the material and information.Materiaal en methodes
The manual explains the general principles for treatment, basic attitudes for clinicians and specific treatment strategies. A training program was developed according the train the trainer principle. Educational movies are made around key themes like basic attitude, discussing diagnosis, repairing ruptures in the therapeutic alliance, team consultation etc. For the collaborating institutions the material is available via the website.Resultaten
The manual is available and the training program has been successfully executed. New educational movies are periodically added. Professionals experience the training program, the educational movies, and the content of the website as very helpful. In regular meetings representatives of the institutions work together further development of the educational material.Conclusie
Good educational material and a training program is not only essential for a successful implementation but is also very inspiring for professionals to contribute on the improvement of personality disorder treatment.Auteurs

In this presentation the focus will be on how to implement the GIT-PD program in an existing mental health department. We will be discussing the general procedures, the pitfalls, examples from the daily-based practice and specific outcomes (different institutions have shaped the model in their own way).Materiaal en methodes
Implementation GIT-PD in the Netherlands started with a central organized training course (“train the trainer”), organized by The Expertise Centre of Personality Disorders, which was visited by mental health practitioners from different mental heath institutions. After the training, the trained practitioners started to coach their colleagues in their institution. Every institution then worked out the process in their own way, but there are some clear main features..Resultaten
At the moment there are a few institutions which have implemented GIT-PD at an advanced stage. They all started with the same course but shaped the framework into their own. We get positive signs from practitioners as well as patients, which will, of course, be objectivizedConclusie
Implementation of a new mental health care program for personality disorders knows a few main features, but can also be adapted to the specific needs and qualifications of the mental health organization that is implementing it.Auteurs
