Introductie

A quantity of studies have researched on Chinese adolescents’ anxiety, however, little attention has received for its natural grouping. The main purpose of current study was to investigate the characteristics of anxiety in Chinese adolescents using Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) with the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders.

Materiaal en methodes

LPA was conducted with a sample of 2,158 participants aged 12-20 years from 3 urban school, Beijing, with SCARED, The Children’s Automatic Thoughts Scale (CATS) and The Short Mood and Feelings Questionnaire (SMFQ). LPA was carried out in Mplus 7.0 to explore the most likely number of classes based on the subscales of SCARED.

Resultaten

Results suggested a best-fitting model with three profiles: Low Group with Diffuse Types of Anxiety, Moderate Group with Predominant Generalized and Social Anxiety and High Group with Predominant Somatization Anxiety. Additional analyses using Regression Mixture Modeling suggested that age and gender significantly predicted the classification. Finally, in support of the construct validity of the anxiety profiles, differential negative cognitions measured by CATS predicted the anxiety profiles, with depressive severity controlled.

Conclusie

The current study supports an intuitive model of adolescents’ anxiety in a large, non-Western population. Limitations and clinical implications of the present study were discussed.
