Introductie

"Psychological Therapy" (Grawe) is an already integrative approach with an emphasis on CBT, individual case formulations, and the therapeutic relationship. The weight of work on emotions, cognitions and behavior should depend on the situation with every single patient. It has, however, been found that therapists prefer to use cognitive and behavioral interventions, as these seem easier and therapists feel competent with them more quickly. To set a counterweight, an effort is made to integrate conceptual and technical elements of Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT).

Materiaal en methodes

Such an integration is not trivial: integration can pose difficulties for the therapists, good old components of therapy may become disadvantaged, etc. In the RCT study to be presented here, two forms of therapy, one integrating EFT elements into TAU, are compared mainly in terms of processes and differential effects. Representatives of the participating approaches of therapy have been involved in such a way that a fair realisation of these approaches is guaranteed.

Resultaten

While the procedures in the two arms are pretty different, the outcomes are, as expected not dramatically different in average. Interesting differences are found, however, as far as feasibility of the approaches, duration, drop outs, and differential treatment effects are concerned.
