Introductie

Il conformista is a 1970 political drama film directed by Bernardo Bertolucci. The screenplay was written by Bertolucci based on the 1951 novel The Conformist by Alberto Moravia. Plot: Marcello Clerici is a traumatized man, with a incoherent sense of himself and others who conforms to the image he assumes people around him expect from him. He easily shifts from one identity to another and seems to have no remorse nor any guilt feelings. He is definitely a good example what we would call a conformist. Conformism in the Netherlands is associated with follower, an opportunist, a collaborator. Someone we look down on. In this film presentation it will be discussed whether it’s possible not to be a conformist in other words whether we are able to stand out, able to make our own judgments even when we lack the support of the group we belong to. This theme will be discusses using Doskojevski’s novel " The Grand Inquisitor” in which he argues that people’s greatest fear is being free to choose, making their own jugdments. The film will last 109 minutes followed by a 30 minutes lecture.
