Introductie

Students suffer from several sleep problems and are at an age group which has a high risk of developing psychological disorders. Sleep problems often precede the onset of depression and anxiety disorders. We present a study that investigates the effectiveness of a new multi-component intervention protocol in students with sleep problems. The intervention protocol involves four 2-hour group-therapy sessions and combines cognitive-behavioural therapy for insomnia, mindfulness, acceptance and lifestyle components with the aim to improve sleep quality, mood, anxiety and quality of life and prevent depression and anxiety disorders in the long run. This is the first inclusive protocol that is designed to improve the mental health of students by integrating interventions and from different psychotherapy perspectives.

Materiaal en methodes

Participants are university students with significant sleep problems (>10; on Insomnia Severity Index). They are randomized to the multi-component intervention group (n=24) or to a waiting list control (n=24) who will receive the intervention afterwards. A 6-month follow-up will be administered. We will include subjective (self-report) and objective measures (actigraphy)) as well as ecological momentary assessments to investigate mechanisms of change during the therapy.

Conclusie

The diverse components of the protocol and the design of the study will be discussed.
