Introductie

This study aimed to explore whether PTSD from past trauma was associated with psychiatric co-morbidity and burnout among Chinese primary and secondary school teachers and whether this association would be mediated by forgiveness and moderated by perceived school climate.

Materiaal en methodes

Procedure: Two hundred and seventy nine Chinese primary and secondary teachers (F=223, M=56) completed a demographic questionnaire, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist for DSM-5, General Health Questionnaire-28, Maslach Burnout Inventory-Educator’s Survey, Heartland Forgiveness Scale, and Revised School Level Environment Questionnaire.

Resultaten

Results: Form-teachers reported significantly higher levels of burnout and psychiatric co-morbidity compared to non-form teachers. PTSD from past trauma was positively correlated with burnout and psychiatric co-morbidity and negatively correlated with forgiveness. Forgiveness mediated the impact of PTSD on psychiatric co-morbidity and burnout but the mediational effect was not moderated by perceived school climate.

Conclusie

Conclusion: School teachers with a high level of PTSD from past trauma tended to be less forgiving which in turn affected their levels of burnout and psychiatric co-morbidity. These reactions seemed to be independent of their perception of school climate.
