Introductie
Our paper aims to present a short-term therapeutic intervention, supervised by Dr. N.Takis,. in the case of gender dysphoria of a young adult. The theoretical underpinnings and the applied findings during the 15 sessions of therapy at the Counseling Center of the American College of Greece will be presented.
Materiaal en methodes
Our theoretical approach covers, the insecure parental attachment of the individual, the sense of abandonment within a divorced family, an ill-developed sense of self, the separation-individuation issues involved, and the role of object relations in creating a genuine sense of self that the young adult feels comfortable with.
Resultaten
A detailed account of the client’s therapeutic itinerary during the sessions will be presented. From the sense of isolation, dismay, and revolt towards parental and social cliches, to the gradual realization that being loved and appreciated for who you feel you are involves personal courage, but also, openness, acceptance, and embracement.
Conclusie
The uncertainty as to “who/what am I...?” exacerbates one’s sense of isolation and worthlessness. It is decried by most for non-conformity, while it cannot readily identify with a gender minority group. This, conditions the emotional instability, and behavioral unpredictability of the individual, towards, narcissistic outbursts, depression, and suicidal ideation.
