Summary

This workshop will explore the neural architecture of emotional behavior by examining various brain structures laying the foundation for higher level social-emotional functioning.  There will be a discussion on numerous emotional conditions such as anxiety, depression, and mood disorders, as well as how bullying behavior directly impacts academic learning.  In addition, specific biological factors related to the development of stress management and emotional self-regulation will be explored.   Schools can enhance emotional wellness in children through early prevention efforts, appropriate assessment strategies, and an improved school climate to foster emotional growth for all children.  The presentation will conclude with a discussion on how every school can become a “trauma-informed” school to meet the diverse social-emotional needs of all learners.  The role of the school psychologist to better recognize, communicate, screen, and provide appropriate intervention services for children who have experienced stress, trauma, and emotional dysfunction will be featured.
