Summary

The societal problem of child sexual abuse (CSA) is found in all levels of society and varies from verbal suggestions to physical force.  South Africa has one of the highest rates of rape cases reported to police in the world.

Many sexually abused children attend school and sit in classrooms trying to manage with the daily academic demands made on them.

Therefore, the primary objective of this research was to answer the following research question: How does child sexual abuse impact on the school life experiences and academic performance of learners?

In order to do this, a mixed methods research approach was used, with the qualitative method being the primary and the quantitative being the secondary means of data collection.

The findings of the research are presented, referring to their health, sexuality and sexual experiences; their social development; their school related experiences and advice from survivors.

Finally recommendations are offered to educators relating to effective understanding, awareness, identification of, and help regarding the trauma, thus empowering CSA victims for life.
