Summary

This workshop will provide information about the components of a cultural-social context psychology base developed to work with culturally diverse populations and particularly Hispanics in the United States.  It is also aimed at helping the participant acquire skills that will assist them in promoting the development of social-emotional competencies as well as fostering a positive, healthy self esteem in Hispanic and other culturally diverse children and adolescents. It will cover implications for intervention as well as specific interventions designed for purposes of assisting culturally diverse children in developing a positive self image that incorporates the child's personal cultural learnings, values and worldview and without lossing the cultural self.  The expected learning outcomes include:  1) understanding the process of adaptation (and major implications) in a diverse environment, 2) understanding the impact of the battle of th worldviews in personality development, 3) differentiating between healthy and unhealthy coping and how oppression is manifested in psychological ways, 4) learning 5 major interventions that form the base for the specific interventions presented later, 5) presenting 10 cultural-psychology based specific interventions that are designed to facilitate the social emotional well being of culturally diverse/Hispanic individuals within a learning context that is relevant to their needs.
