Summary

This workshop will show psychologists how to teach parents to be autonomy and relatedness supportive with their children. This is important because the sincere efforts of many parents backfire due to being controlling or permissive. Twenty-one autonomy and relatedness supportive communication techniques will be shared and exemplified by powerful stories of parents who overcame the tendency to be controlling and students who became significantly more intrinsically motivated, academically engaged, academically successful and/or happy. These are composite stories based upon many years of practice as a school psychologist and positive education consultant. Many of the techniques will be modeled via video skits developed by the author in collaboration with a professional actor. Likewise, controlling parenting and teaching will be clarified via video skits. In addition, psychologists and educators attending the workshop will have the opportunity to practice the techniques during lighthearted parent-child role-plays. School psychologists and educators will leave with practical insights about how to promote optimal parent involvement for students of all ages via communicating in an autonomy and relatedness supportive way.
