Summary

As School Psychologists in training, did our pedagogical journey include instruction of organizational structures, culture, leadership; and effective conflict resolution skills to facilitate win-win outcomes -without compromising ethical standards?

School Psychologists obtain required training in ethics, cognitive, academic, therapeutic and behavioral theory for application in school settings. However, short/long-term student well-being also depends on effective conflict resolution skills to resolve discourse between organizational culture, teacher and school official expectations, and the School Psychologist’s ethical duty to do no harm. Struggling students are often caught between frustrated teachers and school officials, angry parents, and the school psychologist’s effort to provide effective and timely student support. Literature confirms that such organizational dissonance contributes to student marginalization, reduced self-efficacy and impaired student well-being.

This Toolkit workshop presents a research-based overview of organizational psychology, culture and leadership styles in school settings which may result in conflict, resulting in barriers to effective service delivery. Attendees will be provided with conflict resolution strategies that promote healthy organizational relationships which further benefit student psychological well-being and self-efficacy.

The workshop will conclude with a discussion of future directions in pedagogy as it relates to instruction in organizational issues for emerging and early career School Psychologists.
