Fostering Strengths in Special Needs Students

Summary

Special  needs students are too often rejected, victimized, and bullied. They often find it difficult to be included except when teachers and psychologists engineer the inclusion. This discussion will focus on strategies that emphasize the students abilities, not disabilities . It will show that with their disabilities students often have an ability. ADHD students often have for example incredible energy and can see many things. In addition building expertise for students will be diiscussed. For example making them an expert on cars. When students become an expert, they can be identified by all students for their expertise. Building these positive areas of competence promotes more collaborative relationships as well as providing students with special needs a boost to their self esteem. Being respected by peers for their abilities and areas of competence  will foster the students self -esteem as well as reducing incidences of bullying and victimization.
