Summary

Early identification of young students with social, emotional, and behavioral skill deficits is an essential step in building social, emotional, and behavioral prevention and intervention programming. Universal screening within a multi-tiered system of support provides a mechanism to proactively identify students with social, emotional, and behavioral risk and offer early intervention. However, there is a lack of best practice guidance for universal screening procedures and processes at the preschool level. The proposed paper presentation will outline the importance of screening and early intervention at the preschool level, discuss potential screening constructs, and review three potential procedures for universal screening with preschool children. We will conclude with a summary of unique challenges and opportunities for universal screening at the preschool level, indicate implications for practice, and identify potential areas for future research.
