Summary

Despite significant reforms in education systems of industrialized nations, students with special education needs remain susceptible to various forms of discrimination.  Prevention and intervention endeavors to promote student social and emotional well-being can be enacted through school laws and policies founded upon principles of psychology. These laws and policies can reduce disparate treatment and decrease the overflow of school discipline to the juvenile delinquency system.  Presented by a licensed school psychologist and school solicitor, the legal and ethical boundaries of collaboration between law, psychology, and education will be debated. This workshop will review the importance of advocacy efforts to promote social and emotional wellness for students. The perceived barriers to the implementation of preventative school practices will be reviewed. Participants will gain skills needed to better advocate for student well-being through a review of ethically and legally aligned framework for prevention, intervention, and assessment of students from diverse social, cultural, linguistic, and racial backgrounds.  This session will also suggest practice tips for conducting strengths-based prevention, intervention, and assessment practices.
