Summary

Reading fluency is often defined as one’s ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression. Although reading fluency is an essential part of foundational literacy skills and is necessary for proficient reading comprehension, estimates across many nations suggest that at least 35% of students are non-fluent readers. To support students’ reading development, our team created an evidence-based and feasible-to-use intervention program that directly improves students’ reading fluency. The program, called HELPS in English, is also available in Spanish and Portuguese. These programs are being used in at least 60 different nations, and more than 15 studies have documented the program’s effectiveness. Based on workshop content and many hands-on/skill-development opportunities integrated throughout, we expect attendees to learn: (a) how HELPS fits within the context of developing students’ foundational literacy skills, including current research evidence supporting the program; (b) how to implement the program with students and how to feasibly assist other educators (e.g., classroom teachers) with using the program; and (c) how to access the program and its training materials completely free. For those interested, attendees will also learn how they can support translation and adaptation of the program into additional languages (those beyond English, Spanish, and Portuguese).
