Summary

It is vital that educators and the wider school community understand the importance of wellbeing promotion for young people.  A sequential school-wide program needs to be established to teach social and emotional skills to enhance wellbeing within the learning framework.

The school psychologist can play a pivotal role in the formation and measurement of outcomes of such a framework including the empowerment and education of both educators and their wider school community to support this framework in and beyond the classroom.

This practical presentation focuses on how the psychologist in an Australian school has established a culture to develop a comprehensive “Wellbeing for Learning” framework and a shared understanding and language. This framework focuses on 3 components:

1.Educators: The development of practical teaching and learning strategies and social and emotional skill development that have become part of each teacher’s daily pedagogy.

2.Students – the development of a growth mindset to help build resilient and adaptable thinkers who are compassionate and socially responsible citizens.

3.Parents/ carers – empowering parents by building their understanding of the skills to enhance the wellbeing of their children

This “Wellbeing for Learning” framework aims to help students maximise individual performance and enhance wellbeing for life.
