Summary

Transitions are essential for growth and development.  The way in which transitons are negotiated can enhance or become barriers to life satisfaction. Of particular challenge is the transiton from the protected environment of structured education of at least 12 years, together with parental involvement.  Leaving secondary school on the path to university, the world of work, the military brings a variety of emotions from joy and excitment to fear and anxiety.  The transition can present particular challenges to individuals with special needs.  The secondary school psychologist can play a critical role in supporting this critical transiton.  This workshop will focus on prevention and intervention stratagies to support students as they transiton ito the next developmental level of emerging adulthod with growing independence and self-determination.  Preparing students fror the differences between secondary school and university, time management, study skills, negotiting conflict, developing relationships and leaving home are among the areas to be discussed.  A particular focus of the workshop is in preparing students with special needs emphasizing self-advocacy and strategies for seeking accomodations in both school and the workplace.  Specific techniques will be demonstrated and participant involvement is encouraged.
