Social and emotional learning (SEL) programs for young learners have received burgeoning attention across fields of education, research and policy, due to growing evidence of their impact on children’s overall wellbeing. Several SEL programs have been adapted cross-culturally, however, there is limited research on the adaptability of SEL programs in preschools in Taiwan. This study contributes to our understanding of the drivers of successful program implementation across cultures. This project investigates the processes of integrating a specific social-emotional learning program developed in Australia titled COPE-R in a preschool setting in Taiwan. The study investigates how teachers are able to integrate and teach a social-emotional learning program within their preschool curriculum, and the outcomes of this program for both the implementing teachers and the children receiving it. This presentation will focus on the cross-cultural considerations in designing, implementing and evaluating the COPE-R program. In addition to evaluating the program’s efficacy, the current presentation also explores how empowering teacher’s professional development on social-emotional learning contributes to children and teacher’s social-emotional competence.
