Although developmental in nature, Learning Disabilities (LDs) persist into adulthood and impact adult life. Adults with LD are more likely to have problems in psychosocial well-being and quality of life (e.g., symptoms of depression and anxiety, low self-esteem) than individuals without LD. Moreover, individuals with LDs have difficulties attaining educational degrees and are at risk of unemployment and adult-age mental illness (e.g. Aro et al., 2019).
The present study aims at studying health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and individuals’ psychosocial well-being in young adults with LD in post-secondary settings.
Invitations to participate in the survey will be issued to undergraduate students enrolled at two Italian Universities with a diagnosis of a LD (N = about 700; expected participation rate: 30-40%). Participants will be asked to complete an online questionnaire including: WHOQOL-Bref (26 items); Warwick-Edinburgh mental well-being scale (14 items); Multidimensional Scale of Social Support (12 items); Academic self-efficacy scale (12 items); and a Single-Item Self-Esteem Scale.
The data collection is ongoing. The results will be available for the conference.
In the light of the findings, implications for the implementation of intervention programs directed at improving students’ psychological well-being and perceived quality of life will be discussed.
