Summary

The study explored the development of resilience in college students with learning disabilities. Understanding experiences of resilience building in college students with learning disabilities is important because the information about positive dynamics of adaptive systems during development process provides insights to prevention and intervention for LD students. In this study, we interviewed three LD college students by narrative approach. The participants’ life stories were derived by adopting categorical-content approach with focus of resilience-building experience. Three participants were identified as LD with different subtypes. Preliminary analyses showed that resilience development of three LD college students involved different themes of the process of resilience-building: pursuing the sense of accomplishment, making inward-outward connection, and touching the authentic self. The factors of resilience-building were found both related to the self and social supportive systems. In general, prevention from the further threatens/ difficulties and getting out of a crisis were two main goals for LD college students’ resilience building.
