Summary

Given the prevalence of school-age students impacted by trauma, universal prevention programs in schools are critical to reduce the negative impacts of trauma and to enhance students’ resiliency.  This presentation will discuss the impact of trauma on learning and the brain, review and critique the different models that influence trauma-informed education discussed in the literature and provide practical and evidence-based guidelines for implementing trauma-informed school-wide interventions that reach all students.

More specifically, participants in this workshop will gain information regarding the nature of adverse childhood experiences or ACEs, how these experiences impact learning, health, and wellbeing across a lifetime, and the similarities and differences between different models of Trauma-Informed Education.  Lastly, participants will learn school-wide and classroom-based strategies for reducing the impact of trauma and building resilience by establishing a sense of safety and predictability, fostering positive relationships, and teaching key coping skills.
