Summary

It is estimated that in the USA at least 5% of practicing school psychologists leave the profession every year due to feelings of burnout in the field (Schilling, Randolf and Boan-Lenzo, 2017). This statistic is set to rise as school personnel, particularly school based mental health professipnals and teachers, become more directly engaged in the day to day business of crisis prevention and intervention, including first responder roles. It is vital, therefore, that attention is directed toward the matter of self care; both personal and professional longevity depend upon it. This workshop will draw upon the principles of affective neuroscience to more clearly define the pathway to compassion satisfaction or compassion fatigue (van Dernoot Lipsky, 2007). The Natural Resilience Model (Fletcher- Janzen & McGirl, 2018) will provide the framework for the translation of theory into practical application. The ulitmate aim is to offer a blueprint for the sustainable self.
