Summary

While it has long been acknowledged that social and emotional functioning impacts academic success, learning has been deemed a largely cognitive pursuit, enhanced by opportunities to develop socal and emotional skills. Advances in neuroscience have highlighted the interconectedness of emotion and cognition, and that indeed emotion is the driver for cognitive processes underlying social connectedness and the development of moral, motivated lifelong learners (Immordino-Yang, 2016; Damasio, 2005). The neurobiological foundations are laid in the early years, highly influenced by the caregiving environment and the stress response. The implications for early childhood education are profound, prompting a rethink of pedagogy and practice related to learning and discipline. This workshop will provide a opportunty to explore the social neuroscience of education (Cozolino, 2016) and translate into practical applications for the evolution of 21st century schools that address 21st century issues.
