The workshop introduces the idea and practice of the «Praxisforschung», as it is exercised by the department of “Erziehungsberatung” in the Kanton of Bern in Switzerland. The department provides school psychology, educational counseling for parents, psychotherapy and expert opinions for public authorities enforcing child protection. The service covers an area of 1 Million inhabitants.
In this complex field, an evidencebased approach is crucial. However, how to base our work in detail on scientific evidence is not evident at all. Working in such a complex field is not a mere application of scientific knowledge without any presuppositions. Thus our department created the “Praxisforschung”, a framework in order to research our own practice: What is good practice? How can we use context sensitive rules for the application of scientific knowledge? How can we reflect achieved practical and often implicit knowledge, make it explicit and link it to evidence based scientific knowledge? How can we share these forms of knowledge within our organization? “Praxisforschung” helps us to develop a deliberate practice and expertise, individually and as an organization.
The workshop reviews briefly the scientific literature, addresses these questions and highlights the institutional framework created for this purpose.
