Summary

To ensure the academic success of all students, schools must create innovative solutions for providing mental and behavioral health services.   While schools have a long tradition of providing psychological and social services, the development and implementation of new services, and building capacity for new services remains difficult.  Through a federally funded grant effort, The Institute for Translational Research Education (ITRE) has developed a service learning based curriculum that enables teams of graduate students to work with schools and other community partners to build capacity, develop, and implement behavioral and mental health services in the schools.  Based in the principles of implementation science, the effort emphasizes the value of using evidence based services and maintaining fidelity to program requirements, while also acknowledging the critical importance of fitting programs to the unique characteristics of the school, the community, and students, and adapting programs to ensure their successful implementation and sustainability.  The presentation will introduce concepts of implementation science for school based services, describe the service learning model, provide practical applications, and offer examples of school based implementation science efforts.
