Summary

Social and Emotional Competences Scale of Eight Abilities in Career Development (SEC-8Career Scale) is a measurement tool for Japanese senior high school students to measure perceived social and emotional competences in career development based on the framework of eight abilities: 1) self-awareness, 2) social awareness, 3) relationship skills, 4) responsible decision-making, 5) self-management, 6) well-being-promotion and problem-prevention skills, 7) coping skills and social support for transition and crises, and 8) contributory-service-related skills. These abilities are based on CASEL (2012) and Elias et al. (1997). Japanese senior high school students (10th to 12th grades, N=228) responded to questionnaires and the results showed moderate to high correlation between SEC-8Carrer Scale scores and school adjustment (i. e., satisfaction in school life, relationship with friends, and social skills). However, self-esteem was not correlated with SEC-8Career Scale scores. School life of Japanese senior high school students was discussed in terms of career development. The next step is to examine the effects of a SEL program for career development of senior high school students (SEL-8Career program) based on the eight-ability framework (Koizumi, 2017).
