Summary

Psychological consultation is widely recognized as a core component of our role in school psychology. It is a role that allows us to focus on prevention and interventions at both system-wide and individual levels. Nevertheless, many school psychologists may be insufficiently trained, either due to lack of adequate basic courses that provide theoretical grounding and skills, and/or lack of ongoing field supervision over time.

This roundtable will focus on needs for training and supervision. We will discuss how consultation training is conducted in different countries and how school psychologists are “socialized” to rely on consultation as a primary role. We invite participants to consider resources as well as theoretical narratives that guide training, and opportunities for ongoing supervision.

Based on our discussion, we propose that the Consultation Task Force should work to develop guidelines for training and supervision that can be incorporated in practice guidelines and adopted by ISPA member countries.   Our goal is to encourage sustained, high level practice of consultation across the span of school psychologists’ careers from initial pre-service training through ongoing supervision.
