The workshop will exemplify the four purposes of assessment - screening, diagnosis, progress monitoring and outcome; data-based decisions; and their direct impact on classroom instruction and early literacy skills of all students, particularly, student subgroups who are at risk for failure. Emphasis will be on using a curriculum-based measure -AIMSwebplus and evidence of its direct connection to the diagnostic assessment NWEA Reading through three benchmarking periods of the school year and the ultimate correlation of these assessments to predict student proficiency on State's standards-based tests.
It will further explore the challenges and successes of a strategic and systematic research-based intervention plan, flexible grouping of students, creative scheduling of literacy block that allows for appropriate differentiation and skill building for students in an urban school with 50% special education students and 100% economically disadvantaged students. Growth trends of selected students' performance and trajectory towards expected performance goal for each grade will be shared. The results will be compared with another urban school that has 100% success with early literacy. Results from a suburban school will also be shared for a differential comparison.
In conclusion, participants will learn how to move students who are below average on AIMSwebplus to average and above average range through supplemental reading programs.
