Summary

Education continues to focus on the development of student well-being. This workshop highlights outcome research in the areas of social-emotional learning, lifestyle activity and positive psychology that have contributed substantively to the promotion of well-being.  The additional dimension of “sustainable” well-being across the lifespan is now essential for education in our global family. Personal well-being without regard for others or the environment would be hazardous in the long run!

The presenters will describe their participation in a multi-year, credit-bearing school board program involving social justice experiences for 1,600 staff and students travelling to Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Ecuador, India, Nicaragua, and Israel. Participants built schools, dug wells, toured important landmarks and exchanged cultural knowledge with their global family. The presenters will discuss first-hand experiences with meaningful learning and the development of cultural sensitivity inherent in social justice experiences.

Workshop attendees will be invited to share their school-based experiences with well-being initiatives and reflect on possibilities for creating a “sustainable” well-being ethos in their home schools.  Participants will consider a range of initiatives to promote lifelong learning opportunities for students and will also explore their own lifelong learning opportunities through cultural exchange and study at ISPA conferences.
