Summary

Schools can serve as a protective and risk factor for juvenile delinquency. Risk factors associated with juvenile delinquency, such as social-emotional deficits and academic failure, can be addressed through school prevention programs. However, through zero tolerance policies and exclusionary discipline, schools are pushing youth away from education and toward the juvenile justice system. A review of current literature revealed prevention and intervention programs for juvenile delinquency including; school-wide positive behavior intervention and support, social-emotional learning curriculum, policy change, mentorships, extracurricular activities, counseling, restorative justice, and aggression replacement therapy. In order to address the complex factors leading to juvenile delinquency, interventions are examined through a multi-tiered system of supports. The proposed presentation will provide information on the role of school psychologists and tools for preventing juvenile delinquency and supporting youth involved with the juvenile justice program to reduce recidivism.
