Summary

This session will explore a recent study examining the psychometric properties of the Student Risk Screening Scale for Internalizing and Externalizing Behaviors (SRSS-IE).  The SRSS-IE is a revised universal screening tool, developed by Lane and colleagues (2012), aimed at early identification of students who may be at risk for emotional and behavioral concerns.  The presentation outlines a study examining whether the items on the SRSS-IE performed as expected given the degree of measurement precision of its items using a sample of over 2,000 middle school students in the United States.  Item response theory (IRT) analyses were used to examine the response scale of the SRSS-IE.  Additionally, differential item functioning (DIF) was used to determine whether systematic differences exist in teachers’ ratings of male and female students on the SRSS-IE constructs.  Throughout this session, attendees will understand the role of universal screening for behavioral concerns within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports.  Additionally, attendees will gain a better understanding of the benefits and limitations of using the SRSS-IE to screen for behavioral concerns within their own school context.  Finally, attendees will better understand how to use screening data to make recommendations for providing additional supports for students in need.
