Summary

Traditional education systems are not designed to cater to students who identify as racial and sexual minorities.  As a result, some of these students may be at elevated risk for poor mental health and academic outcomes.  This will be a discussion of how best to support students who identify as LGBTQ+.  Special emphasis will be placed on serving students who have intersecting identities - including LGBTQ+ students who are also ethnic or racial minorities.  The goal of this roundtable discussion is for participants to share their own strategies that have worked well in their school systems, and to discuss how to address systemic challenges that may hinder school psychologists and other service providers when supporting these students.  Finally, some data from a recent original study by the presenter will be shared with participants, showing school climate around LGBTQ+ identified students in the Upper Midwestern United States, and how these data could lead to informed intervention.
