Summary

Despite the widespread practice of providing psychological support to Japanese schools in crisis, there is little consensus regarding its basic concepts and methods. Therefore, this study aimed to develop guidelines for psychological support to schools in crisis. In this report, we examine the framework for providing support to schools after sudden accidents, excluding natural disasters.

A two-round, web-based Delphi process was conducted. Among 130 expert participants, 107 (87%) were valid respondents. The item with the highest mean score of 8.50 was regarding the method of sharing information about the accident with students, parents, and community. The item with the lowest mean score of 6.95 was regarding the separation of investigation process and provision of psychological support. Only this item did not meet the consensus criteria.

On adding the purpose of investigation according to the comments, the mean score rose to 8.21, and reached the criteria in the second survey. Though the mean score of the item (7.07) that recommended reporting of facts by homeroom teacher in class unit reached the criteria, there were various opinions about the necessity of school-wide sharing and burden on teachers. On revising the item according to these comments, the score rose to 8.05.
