Summary

Disruptive behaviors in the classroom often impact the learning environment (Reinke & Herman, 2002). While school psychologists may provide direct individualized support to students with behavioral needs, they may also choose to provide indirect support by collaborating with teachers to broaden their impact (Ysseldyke et al., 2006). Due to competing priorities in the classroom, school psychologists may find that teachers are not implementing interventions with fidelity (Abry, Rimm, Larsen, & Brewer, 2013; Century, Rudnick & Freeman, 2010). Novice teachers, in particular, may lack the resources or skills, to implement a behavioral intervention well (Emmer & Stough, 2001).

This workshop will provide attendees with the skills they need to help teachers manage challenging behaviors in the classroom. Common problem behaviors exhibited by students as well as factors related to poor intervention implementation will be discussed. The presenter will demonstrate how to utilize various consultation techniques to increase teacher participation and intervention fidelity. Attendees will have the opportunity to practice the strategies presented and receive feedback.

In this workshop, attendees will learn (1) how to educate teachers on basic behavioral principles, (2) how to address teachers’ concerns, and (3) how to hold teachers accountable.
