The purpose of this study was to find the characteristics of resilience that students learned from their experiences of East Japan Disaster, 2011. In March 2016, 246 fifth graders and 129 seventh graders responded to the questionnaire including the question about “Tell us about how you have worked and improved your life after the disaster”. As results of quantitative study using thematic analysis, 5th graders gave us 304 descriptions which were categorized into four themes : (a) work as students such as “study”, (b) behave as a member of family, school, and society, such as “respect rules”,(c) take care of themselves such as “keep health”, and (d) prepare for natural disasters such as “ prepare a safety map”. The seventh graders gave us 143 descriptions which were categorized into four themes: (a)work as students such as “study”, (b) behave as a member of family, school, and society such as “work for community”, (c) live for “now” such as “appreciate the time with friends”, and (d) prepare for the natural disasters such as “prepare food for the crisis”. It was suggested that students learned resilience such as respecting themselves, others, and community from their experiences of the disaster.
