Summary of Symposium

To empower children to become lifelong learners we must understand their strengths and challenges – and we need to understand the whole child, not just one aspect of their development. For this reason the IDS-2 were developed: a comprehensive assessment designed to measure six dimensions of children and adolescents ages 5;0-20;11 years.

Available now in German, Dutch and Polish, with Italian and English adaptations finishing in 2019, the IDS-2 uses the Cattell-Horn-Carroll theory of hierarchical intelligence to assess cognitive ability. Executive functions are also evaluated along with the developmental dimensions of psychomotor skills, social-emotional skills, basic school skills, and motivation and attitude.

Summary

Polish version of IDS-2 is the same as original version except tests in which some changes were needed due to linguistic reasons (e.g. Language skills, Spelling, Naming categories) or different difficulty of items (e.g. Logical mathematical reasoning) for Polish children. Standardization sample included 1642 children and adolescents, aged 5 to 20. It was constructed using quota sampling method to represent structure of Polish population considering child sex, place of residence (big cities, small cities, villages) and mother’s level of education. Among a few clinical groups one was constituted of children with mild and moderate intellectual disability. We will present empirical data which shows how IDS-2 could be used in assessment of intellectually disabled children for the following purposes: differentiation between norm and intellectual disability, differentiation between mild and moderate intellectual disability, identification strengths and weaknesses of cognitive abilities, executive functions, different skills and competences of intellectually disabled children.

Summary

Since the beginning of this year, we use the IDS-2 in The Netherlands. The test is adjusted to the Dutch situation and has Dutch norms. As in many countries around the world the IDS-2 is a new instrument. Although we do see great advantages of the test, the IDS-2 has to be considered within the current range of instruments in the Netherlands. It is therefore important to examine both the strengths of the IDS-2 and the additional value of this new instrument over existing instruments. This presentation will focus on the concurrent and differential validity of the IDS-2. We have compared the IDS-2 with the most used instruments in the various domains that the IDS-2 covers. For Intelligence we found high correlations. This suggests that the subtests of the IDS-2 Intelligence domain test a similar, yet not the same construct as Wechsler and SON tests. For the domain of Executive Functions and the Developmental abilities we found medium to high correlations with BRIEF test. The differential validity studies show significant differences between a matched control group and specific target groups in the expected directions. This is an important indication for the differential validity of the IDS-2.

Summary

The Intelligence and Development Scales in the second completely revised version (IDS-2) is a procedure that is capable of reliably, validly, and objectively assessing six developmentally relevant functions across childhood and adolescence ages 5;0 to 20;11. The relevant developmental functions are Intelligence (Screening, General IQ, IQ Profile), Executive functions, Psychomotor skills, Social-emotional skills, Basic school skills (Reading, Writing, Logical-Mathematical Thinking), as well as Motivation and attitude. The IDS-2 has a modular framework (30 subtests) with user-friendly and attractive test materials; was constructed to identify children’s and adolescents’ knowledge, strengths, and weaknesses in various domains; and enables practitioners to assess and understand a child in a comprehensive way.

·       In the presentation, the original form of the IDS-2 will be introduced, in particular an overview of the IDS-2 conceptual framework and of the subtests. Further, results from the standardization and validation study in the German speaking countries will be presented. Norms of the IDS-2 refer to the state-of-the-art continuous norming procedure. Scoring is online, a platform that eliminates errors, removes the need for manual scoring, and provides an immediate print-out of the relevant test results.
