Summary

As globalization increases international mobility, the number of foreign residents in Japan is increasing. It is only recently that we began to challenge the education of foreigners who do not have same cultural background.

In this paper, we focus on the praxis and psychological conflict of teachers who teach foreign students based on Qualitative survey for teachers in a public night junior high school and nigh-time section of public high school in Tokyo metropolitan area where the number of foreign students is remarkably increasing.

As a result, we find out that education for foreign students varies depending on the teacher. Every teacher emphasizes that the place they live now is in Japan and learning the skills and rules to live in Japan. However, some teachers do not step into the background of foreign students and practice with equal guidance for Japanese students, while others try to understand foreign students’ cultural background and speak with their language.

Namely teachers’ educational practice is diverse. We analyze that is why educational standards for foreign students have not been established in Japan. In this paper, we describe the confusion and transformation in contemporary Japanese schools caused by in transition to Multicultural Symbiotic Societies.
