Summary

This presentation will provide strategies and techniques to enable school psychologists to design interventions to foster emotional self-regulation in children and adolescents; to consult effectively with teachers; and to develop both selected and indicated interventions for students with moderate and severe problems in regulating their feelings and behaviors. Another focus is to share evidence-based interventions to help high-risk children, especially those who have experienced multiple traumas, to manage their emotions.

Strategies and techniques will include, but not be limited to, teaching students emotion management, which includes using a feeling vocabulary, using a feeling thermometer to recognize the intensity of their emotions, and using an imaginary umbrella to protect themselves from hurtful situations. Other approaches include teaching students belly breathing, the turtle technique, the STOP technique, and how to reappraise and alter a potentially volatile emotional situation. Participants will also learn how to help teachers set up calm down corners and establish feeling check-ins. As an added benefit of attending this presentation, participants will receive links to two short free books that can be used to help young children regulate their emotions.
