Summary

Recently, a body of research around Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is growing quickly in the United States (U.S.). While we benefit from the research that focus on the evidence-based SEL programs and practices in the U.S., there is a lack of research on SEL practices in the Asia-Pacific region. Historically, SEL competencies have been core educational components in the Asia-Pacific region, but using different terms such as Education for International Understanding (EIU), Global Citizenship Education, 21st Century Skills, non-cognitive skills, character education, and so on. Therefore, it would be valuable to look at what best practices are present in the Asia-Pacific region that enhances SEL skills, and how each country defines SEL skills as well.

The objective of our study is to identify common or different themes across Asia-Pacific region best practices. We will review 49 EIU Best Practices selected from the UNESCO APCEIU, code practices by SEL Skill and instructional method, and analyze similarities and differences. Instead of comparing practices with the U.S. system, our study aims to use strength-based approach to identify SEL relevant skills embedded in the practices. This will inform practitioners on how to reinforce current practices and also provide information on developing culturally sensitive programs.
